Isprobavanje novih materijala / Fimo Air Natural review

Moj favorit i dalje bez premca ostaje Fimo Air Light.

-------------------------------------------------------------

About two months ago I went to store to buy my all time favorite modeling clay efaplast (now known as Fimo Air Light), and came across Fimo Air Natural. Since it was not too expensive, I bought smaller package to try it out and compare it to Fimo Air Light.
It is at least 95% natural raw materials and it is air-drying. Here is what manufacturer has to say about it: It is ideal for modeling , sculpting, moulding and shaping. When dry it is wood-like and easy to file, drill, carv and sand. It can be painted and lacquered and is very break resistant.
After several tries, my expirience is nothing like that.
In my humble opinion, Fimo Air Natural is best described as a bit dry paper clay. It is not very easy to mould and does not respond well to softening with water. Surface cracks easily while moulding it and it is very sticky (took me about 5 minutes to clean my hands and nails when I finished moulding it).
It dries very slowly and shrinks a little bit (around 5%). For owl sculpture on the picture below it took almost 30 hours to be completely dry, but I think it tooks 8 hours top for thinner pieces.
Sanding was probably the hardest part. It is really hard to sand Fimo Air Natural with fine sands I usually use for Fimo Air Light and Fimo Polymerclay. I also tried carving it, and it was harder then to carv wood, because it is a little bit elastic and when I tried to drill it it cracked around the hole.
Painting it is easy, both with acrylic and watercolors.
What bothered me the most is how surface turned wet and mushy after applying lacquer and it took almost 6 hours for surface to become hard again and there was no shine at all. The other thing that botherd me about applying lacquer is that colors become about half a shade darker, and stay that way even when it is dry, so color of clay became grey, not white.
To compare it to Fimo Air Light, I made two owl sculptures.

For left one I used Fimo Air Light. It took me 5 minutes to mould it, 4 hours for it to dry, 15 minutes to sand it and another 15 to paint and lacquer it and after 2 hours it was completely dry.
For right one I used Fimo Air Natural. It took me 20 minutes to mould it, almost 30 hours for it to dry completely, an hour to sand, paint and lacquer it and 6 hours to dry.
As you can see it takes much more time and effort to work with , so I don't think I am going to buy it again. The same results can be achieved with paper clay, and it is also cheaper.
Hope you find my review useful :)
