Na miris koji se javlja pre i posle kiše utiče nekoliko stvari. Miris koji se oseća pre kiše uglavnom potiče od ozona ( gasovitog molekula koji se sastoji od tri atoma kiseonika), koji nastaje od kiseonika iz vazduha pod uticajem električnog pražnjenja, tj. munja. Ime ozon zapravo potiče od grčke reči ozein, što znači mirisati.
To je vrlo specifičan i oštar miris koji bez greške znači da nailazi oluja sa grmljavinom.

Before the rain begins, one of the first smells you will notice comes from ozone. Ozone is a gas, and its mollecule is composed of three oxygen atoms. It has really strong and sharp specific smell, and when you smell it, there is no doubt thunder storm is coming. The name comes from Greek word ozein, which means to smell.
Na početku i za vreme kiše javlja se još jedan karakterističan miris, koji nije tako oštar, već je prijatan i zemljast. U urbanim sredinama može biti neprijatan, zbog zagađenosti donjih slojeva atmosfere, dok je u prirodnom okruženju mnogo lepši, čak slatkast.
Taj zemljani miris zapravo potiče od bakterija roda Actinomycetes ,tj. od njihovih spora. Te bakterije su aktivne u vlažnim uslovima, i kada su duži periodi suše, one se zatvore u spore. Kada počne da pada kiša, zbog jačine udara te spore se dižu u vazduh i mi ih udišemo i osećamo njihov zemljast miris koji nazivamo mirisom kiše (eng. petrichor) . S obzirom da ove bakterije žive u širokom opsegu uslova i da su prisutne na skoro svim mestima na zemlji, miris kiše je svuda manje- više isti.
Slatkast i jak miris kiše u prirodi potiče od raznih mirišljavih molekula, koji potiču od biljaka, a za vreme sušnih perioda se talože na kamenju i zemlji i bivaju podignuti u vazduh silinom kiše.

When the rain starts falling, there is another very specific soft and earthy smell. In urban environments this smell is sometimes not very pleasent due to air pollution, and in forests this smell is very sweet.
Earthy smell comes from bacteria Actinomycetes which live in soil. When the soil dries out, bacteria produces spores.The wetness and force of rainfall kick these spores up in the air and we breathe them in, which causes this very specific earthy smell. The bacteria is extremly common and can be found in areas all over the world, which accounts for the universality of thiss sweet smell.
Plants often produce volatile oils, which tend to collect on rocks and soil, and are kicked up in the air and into our respiratory system by the force of rainfall, so the smell of rain in forests is much sweeter.
